I-4 Corridor

I-4 is the gateway into and out of the Tampa Bay Region, but the high-demand interstate is over capacity and growing more congested.

I-4 is a major east – west connection in our transportation network, linking the Tampa Bay region to the remainder of the state and nation. I-4 eastbound from Tampa is one of seven one-way evacuation routes in Florida. It connects the economic meccas of Central Florida and West Central Florida regions. Enhancing safety and reducing congestion on I-4 is essential to Florida’s economic, agricultural and technological growth.

Single Express Lane in Each Direction

FDOT has plans to widen I-4 approximately 17 miles from I-75 to the Hillsborough/Polk County line and add one buffer separated express lane in each direction along the I-4 corridor. The express lanes will provide additional capacity, relieve congestion and provide a more reliable travel time option for passenger and transit vehicles.

The planned roadway improvements will occur within existing right of way, however additional right of way may be required for the expansion of one or more existing stormwater management ponds.

Tampa Bay Next interstate improvements are critical to maintain and improve access to major transportation facilities, as well as enhance mobility within the Tampa Bay area.

The I-4 interstate improvement project will:

  •  Enhance safety
  •  Provide better mobility with additional capacity
  •  Accommodate future population and employment growth
  •  Reduce delays and create more reliable travel times
  •  Remain consistent with local and regional transportation plans
  •  Provide express lanes as an option for travelers
