I-4 Corridor

I-4 is the gateway into and out of the Tampa Bay Region, but the high-demand interstate is over capacity and growing more congested.

I-4 is a major east – west connection in our transportation network, linking the Tampa Bay region to the remainder of the state and nation. I-4 eastbound from Tampa is one of seven one-way evacuation routes in Florida. It connects the economic meccas of Central Florida and West Central Florida regions. Enhancing safety and reducing congestion on I-4 is essential to Florida’s economic, agricultural and technological growth.

FDOT is evaluating the need for a multi-lane transportation improvement for a 22.1 mile section of I-4 from east of 50th Street in Hillsborough County to the Polk Parkway in Polk County.

Tampa Bay Next interstate improvements are critical to maintain and improve access to major transportation facilities, as well as enhance mobility within the Tampa Bay area.

The I-4 interstate improvement project will:

  •  Enhance safety
  •  Provide better mobility with additional capacity
  •  Accommodate future population and employment growth
  •  Reduce delays and create more reliable travel times
  •  Remain consistent with local and regional transportation plans
  •  Provide express lanes as an option for travelers
